Experience and levels

Experience works the same way in every skill:

1. The same action always gives the same experience. A trout is always 35 Fishing experience, at level 5 or level 95. It never goes down.
2. Each level needs more experience than the one before, so high levels take longer. The table below shows how much each level needs.
3. Fighting teaches you something with every blow, so the fighting skills (Melee, Blocking, Archery and Magic) have their own, steeper table.

One exception: a creature far weaker than you teaches you less, down to 5% once you have outgrown it. Examine a creature to see how much it teaches you before you fight.

Your character level works the same way: every creature gives the same character experience whatever your level, each level needs more than the last, and a quest gives the experience it promises.

What changed on 29 September 2026

Until then the same work gave a little less experience with each level from level 60 (from level 20 in a fighting skill, and in your character level). Now it gives the same at every level, and the later levels need more instead. Every level takes exactly as long as it did, so nobody who levelled earlier got more for the same work. Every character kept its levels and its progress towards the next; only the totals are counted the new way, so they look bigger. Walking, which used to keep its pace all the way, now follows the same table as every other skill.
